430 Date (4/30) of 2004 when lightweight Joe Lauzon fought his second professional fight at MMA Eruption in Lowell, Massachusetts and claimed his second victory with a submission over Jerry Mosquea.
Lauzon certainly doesn’t look like a guy who can pummel the crap out of people, or more appropriately submit the crap out of them, 13 of his 16 wins have come via submission. Nor does his background highlight his unique abilities. Lauzon is most likely the only graduate of Boston’s Wentworth Institute of Technology (where he earned a degree in Computer Science) to make his way to the cage and he’s certainly the most adept if there have been any others.
After the win over Mosquea four years ago today, Lauzon continued to fight and win. He racked up six more victories in a row to land at 8-0 before losing to the formidable Jorge Masvidal.
The setback didn’t dampen Joe’s spirit but it did send him into a loss – win – loss – win pattern until he broke it by KO’ing Zane Baker with a slam on April 1, 2006 in his second fight of the night. He went on to win a third later in the evening.
The three victories on April 1st improved Lauzon to 13-3 and gave him a shot in the UFC where he promptly shocked everybody by stopping Jens Pulver in only 0:48. Next, he appeared as a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 5 where oddly enough the guy he KO’d, Pulver was a coach.
After losing in the semi-finals to Manvel Gamburyan on the show, Lauzon went back to work in real reality by winning his next two fights in the UFC. This thrust him into the main event at Fight Night 13 where unfortunately for Lauzon he was stopped by Kenny Florian in an exciting fight that capped an exciting card.
All this in only a little over four years! The 23 year old Lauzon, who turns 24 on May 22nd, has packed quite a bit into his early MMA career. Fortunately for the fans we can expect to see a lot more of Joe in the future.
