This Day in MMA History (19 April) Gumby beats up another Guy

419 Date (4/19) of 1999 when Jeremy “Gumby” Horn submitted Mike Delaney with strikes at Freestyle Combat Challenge 1. The victory came on the 109th day of the year and was already Horn’s tenth! These fights stretched from as far north as Montreal, Quebec, Canada all the way down to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where Horn submitted Chuck Liddell with an arm triangle choke on March 5th at UFC 19.

Of course ten wins in a year is more than most people even fight in a year, but after the Delaney submission nine years ago, Horn still had 256 days left in 1999 to rack up victories. And he did just that.

He went on to win seven more in a row before running into Hiromitsu Kanehara at Rings on October 28, 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. Kanehara won the decision over Horn to stop his win streak at 17 on the year and 18 straight overall.

The loss didn’t dampen “Gumby’s” enthusiasm for fighting though. He was back in the cage in only a couple of weeks and racked up three more victories in a two week span! And how about this, the last fight was on November 20th. He didn’t even fight in December.

In all Horn compiled a 20-1 record in 1999. He fought in three countries, on two continents, and from Iowa, to California, to Louisiana and a couple places in between. Kind of makes you tired just thinking about it! It didn’t make Horn tired though. He’s gone on to fight a lot more. As of today April 19, 2008 his record stands at 79-17-5. The crazy year of 1999 was his busiest and it was bracketed by 14 fights in ’98 and 11 in ’00. “Gumby doesn’t mind mixing it up and nine years ago, he proved it once again when he scored just one of 79 victories in just one of his 101 fights!
