MMA Numbers in the News: Handcuffs, Heat, and Hostile Territory

97 Of course UFC (97) is the most high-profile number in the news. The UFC brass is currently in Montreal trying to salvage the event. Zach Arnold at Fight Opinion has a brief article with a link to an article by Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press regarding what is taking place at the meeting.

2 Number of felonies (2) former UFC fighter Kimo Leopoldo was charged with on Monday: possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property. He was also charged with a misdemeanor: possession of drug paraphernalia.

20 Leopoldo is being held on ($20,000) bail in Orange County, California. Loretta Hunt at Sherdog reports that Leopoldo was trying to become the new Executive Officer of the California State Athletic Commission. In his application letter he’d wrote, “I can honestly tell any fighter that tries to use steroids or any other illegal substance that those substances are more of a crutch that will harm their ability to succeed in the industry than an asset that will assist them in moving forward in the industry.”

118 According to an article by Danny Acosta at Sherdog, the temperatures, up to (118) degrees in which Diego Sanchez worked unloading UPS trucks when he was younger. The job made him drop some 17 pounds. In the days leading up to his debut at lightweight against Joe Stevenson at UFC 95, Sanchez will most likely need to endure temperatures much higher than 118 degrees in order to drop those last few pounds.
