This Day in MMA History (July 1) PRIDE Critical Countdown

Earlier today I was reading through some of my old “This Day in MMA History” posts. I thought they were pretty interesting, so I’ve decided to bring them back. I won’t do a history post every day (I stopped them because it was too time consuming), but figure I can do one on a semi-regular basis. So without further adieu:

71 Date (7/1) of 2006 when PRIDE Critical Countdown Absolute was held at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The card was filled with stars like Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett, Mirko Filipovic, both big and little Nog, and a few others. All of these guys were victorious on this night, but for some, wins have been hard to come by since -- most notably Wanderlei Silva.

Three years ago today, “The Axe Murder” punched and soccer kicked Kazuyuki Fajita in route to a TKO victory. The win gave Silva a 31-5-1 record and was his 22nd by way of (T)KO. Unfortunately for the Curitiba, Brazil native and his horde of fans, the victory seems to have signaled the beginning of the end.

The Fujita win was followed by a KO loss to Mirko Cro Cop and another KO loss to Dan Henderson. This would mark Silva’s last appearance in PRIDE before the promotion was purchased and dismantled. Silva then returned to the UFC and suffered through a 1-3 record after losing a close decision to Rich Franklin at UFC 99.

It has been a tough road for Wanderlei of late, and it started after his 31st win three years ago today. Still, “The Axe Murder” is one of the greatest of all time. He puts on great fights and fans will always love him for it.

not just a "this day in history" entry but also a "lets shove silva's testes as far down my throat as possible" entry. congrats on killing two birds with one stone.

Think you need to read it again (or even look at the pictures). Saying a guy has struggled in his last six fights (going 1-5) is not "shoving Silva's testes down my throat" as you so eloquently put it.

Thanks for the comment, even though it didn't make sense.

seriously? shove silva's testes down your throat???

saying someone struggled after going 1-5 is going easy on them.
