The ratings for Strikeforce’s CBS Saturday Night Fights are in and the event did just over four million viewers and peaked at about 5.5 million. This is probably about what was expected considering Fedor Emelianenko is not as big of draw as the one two punch of Kimbo and Gina Carano (previously the big draws on the Elite XC/CBS experiment).
Dana White scoffed at the numbers and in an article by Dave Meltzer had this to say, “We’re pulling those numbers on Spike. I mean, how the [expletive] is what they did considered any good in any way, shape or form? What kind of numbers do you think we would pull with a live show on CBS? I’ll tell you. Huge. It would be significantly, significantly more than what they got with these idiots from Showtime.”
White brings up a good point. The production was pretty crappy and with the help of Kimbo this season of TUF has been ridiculously successful. And over two years ago UFC 75 on Spike did similar numbers to Strikeforce’s inaugural CBS foray.
Many people find Dana White despicably arrogant and want to kick his tenders right up into his mouth, causing pain and the inability to talk so much or eat ice cream without a bitter after taste. But the truth is that Dana is often right and his ice cream will probably remain sweet. Consider what kind of numbers the UFC would do on CBS. We’re talking huge compared to last week’s Strikeforce show. I mean it could grab ten million or more viewers.
The UFC President also had this to say about Fedor. “If I hear any of you guys [sportswriters] calling Fedor the best pound-for-pound, I’m going to go postal. Do you think Brett Rogers would have lasted two minutes with Brock [UFC heavyweight champ Lesnar]? What do you think Cain Velasquez would do to him?”
Now with the risk of the receiving the brutal wrath of Dana looming, and after saying he is almost always right, I’m going to grimace and suck air through clinched teeth while tilting my head and shrugging in an attempt to stay noncommittal. Fedor is really, really good, one of the best. Maybe he is the pound for pound best, but those lists don’t make much sense anyway.
The UFC will have a chance to answer Strikeforce’s ratings in a few short days when UFC 105 is aired on Spike. It will be a rare non-title fight for Randy Couture and his first live appearance on Spike. Add to this that he is 94 years old and the show has a chance for big numbers. If it compares with Strikeforce it will be a rusty nail in Strikeforce President Scott Coker’s side and a horrible paper cut on the tongue of CBS’s Kelly Kahl, and Dana White will continue to eat his non-salty ice cream.
