UFC 106 Ortiz vs. Griffin: Returns, Debuts, and Interesting Fights

This card lost the big fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, but it makes up for it with a handful of intriguing matches. There may be more fights where the outcome is totally up in the air than any event in recent memory.

0 Number of combined wins (0) for headliners Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin in their last five fights. Understandable though when we look at who they’ve fought. Ortiz is 0-2-1 with losses to Chuck Liddell and Lyoto Machida and a draw with Rashad Evans. Griffin is 0-2 with losses to Evans and Anderson Silva.

18 Ortiz’s layoff has lasted almost exactly (18) months. We will see if his repaired back can unearth the Ortiz of old, and we’ll also see if Griffin can rebound after his humiliating loss to Anderson Silva just over three months ago.

709 Josh Koscheck’s last three fights have lasted (7:09). He is 2-1 in those bouts with a KO of Yoshiyuki Yoshida and a TKO of Frank Trigg and a TKO loss to Paulo Thiago sandwiched in between.

41 Koscheck’s opponent, Anthony Johnson, has been winning fast as well. Just under a month ago “Rumble” dropped the same Yoshida in only (41) seconds. The victory opened the door for the Koscheck/Johnson affair that is a drop of Neosporin to the sting of losing Lesnar/Carwin.

170 And this time Johnson made (170) pounds, a full six pounds lighter than he was a month ago.

23 In Paulo Thiago’s first two fights in the UFC, he met up with Koscheck and Jon Fitch. The American Kickboxing Academy fighters combined for (23) fights in the UFC. Thiago dropped Koscheck and lost a decision to Fitch. Now with an 11-1 record and two fights in the UFC he’ll be the one with more experience...

90 Minnesota Martial Arts Academy’s Jacob Volkmann is (9-0) overall and he’ll be making his UFC debut against Thiago.

5 Speaking of UFC debuts, after a shocking KO against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has scored (5) straight impressive victories and earned a spot on the UFC 106 main card. He’ll have his hands full...

31 Luis Cane is (3-1) in the UFC. He dropped his debut at UFC 79 against James Irvin because of an illegal knee and then scored three impressive wins, one against the aforementioned Sokoudjou.

29 Length (29) seconds of Amir Sadollah’s last fight. It resulted in him wilting to the hands of Johny Hendricks and he’ll look to rebound against the New York Bad Ass.

25 The last time Phil Baroni stepped into the Octagon was on (2/5) of 2005. Overall Baroni s 13-11 and his UFC debut came in February of 2001 at UFC 30.

99 Marcus Davis and Ben Saunders suffered losses at UFC (99) in Germany. Now they’ll look to win at the expense of the other at UFC 106 and for Davis it will be his 11th fight with the promotion and first in Las Vegas.

1 There is just (1) middleweight bout on the card and it presents and interesting match up in Kendall Grove and Jake Rosholt. Grove is coming off a loss at UFC 101 and Rosholt is coming off a win at UFC 102.

10 The card will have just (10) fights thanks to Karo Parisyan backing out of his scheduled match up with Dustin Hazelett just two days before the event.
