UFC 107 Penn vs. Sanchez: Long Fights and a Large Discrepancy

8 Diego Sanchez is not adverse to long fights, (8) of his last ten have gone into the third round or ended in decision...

7 Of those long fights (7) have ended in decision and Sanchez is 5-2 when it was in the judges hands.

3 This fight against B.J. Penn for the lightweight belt will be just Sanchez’s (3rd) at 155 pounds. On his first try on the scale he weighed one pound over, but after dropping some clothes he made weight.

522 Penn isn’t adverse to long fights either. His last end in round one came way back on (5/22) of 2004 when he subbed Duane Ludwig in a K-1 event.

10 Since, the first round sub Penn has had (10) fights...

64 His record during that stretch is an average (6-4) but his losses came against very un-average opponents: Lyoto Machida, Matt Hughes, and Georges St. Pierre twice.

11 Cheick Kongo will be making his (11th) appearance in the Octagon when he meets up with Frank Mir.

3 In his previous UFC fights Kongo has lost (3) times and has never been stopped. His last bout was a loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 and it snapped a streak of (3) victories for Kongo by TKO. Overall Kongo is 14-5-1.

34 Mir and Kongo made their professional MMA debuts just (34) days apart. Kongo won via heel hook on June 10, 2001 and Mir scored a decision over Jerome Smith on July 14, 2001.

583 Percentage of submission victories (58.3) for the 12-4 former heavyweight champ Frank Mir. Kongo on the other hand has just won twice by submission.

255 Mir tipped the scales at (25.5) pounds heavier than Kongo.

20 Percentage (20) of Kenny Florian’s fights to go to decision. Florian is 11-4 overall and he lost to Drew Fickett and Sean Sherk via decision and beat Roger Huerta on the cards.

667 Percentage (66.7) of Clay Guida’s last 15 fights to go to decision. Guida is 25-10 overall and has gained the reputation of being able to fight for days at a sickeningly fast pace.

8 Paul Buentello checked in with an (8) pound weight advantage over Stefan Struve, but the almost seven foot tall Struve has just over (8) inches in height on Buentello, who goes by the nickname “The Headhunter.” He might have to go off the top of the cage to find Struve’s head.

49 Days ago (49) when the 18-3 Struve last fought. He submitted Chase Gormley at UFC 104 in Los Angeles. It’s been a tad longer for the 27-10 Buentello who last fought back in January at what turned out to be Affliction’s last show.

101 The veteran Jon Fitch has a (10-1) record in the UFC and he’s meeting up with Mike Pierce who claimed a decision win in his UFC debut against Brock Larson at UFN 19. The 10-figth discrepancy between UFC bouts is by far the largest on the card.

6 Number of other fights on the card (6) and they include: Alan Belcher vs. Wilson Gouveia, Shane Nelson vs. Matt Wiman, Johny Hendricks vs. Ricardo Funch, Rousimar Palhares vs. Lucio Linhares, Damarques Johnson vs. Edgar Garcia, and Kevin Burns vs. T.J. Grant.
