After round one Ronys Torrres’ corner dumped ice all over the Octagon. Joe Rogan went nuts and the guys picking it up did look hilarious. Joe let a few bad words fly as he did play-by-play on the ice spill.
Melvin Guillard went on to win a unanimous decision and said he hopes to fight for the lightweight title by 2011.
Now it’s Mac Danzig and Justin Buchholz in the “loser leaves town” match and it was a pretty good first round. It’s still weird to me to see advertisements for PRIDE on a UFC event.
It looks like it will be Buchholz leaving town. He won the first round, but dropped the second and third.
For the lead in, I really think it would be best if the gladiator started with all his gear then threw down his sword and peeled off his armor then walked to the Octagon.
So it’s Frank Trigg and Matt Serra kicking off the pay per view. I think Trigg looks different with a little bit of hair.
And just like that, Matt Serra is doing a cartwheel and telling his daughter, “I love you.” A big right hand started it and he followed it up with a few more big rights forcing Josh Rosenthal to dive in.
Matt just compared himself to a Lord of the Rings character.
That sucks for Dan Miller. He got kneed in the tenders and then punched like three times.
Joe Rogan was just talking about Miller’s brutal Guillotine in the IFL. It was against Dave Phillips and Joe isn’t kidding, it looked like Miller almost pulled his head off!
Maia’s stand up is looking much better. It looks like he decided it is okay to go ahead and punch people in MMA.
Joe Rogan, “The odds of catching Demian Maia in a submission are like the odds of getting hit in the head with a meteor. They’re not very good.”
It sounds like half the crowd is at the beer stand and the other half is asleep. Seriously, the crowd in the Mandalay is quiet after the Maia/Miller bout.
We’re getting to see a prelim fight between Brian Stann and Phil Davis. Davis looks like a monster.
Stann is a really tough guy. Davis controlled him throughout, but couldn’t finish. Seriously, Davis is a monster.
Back to live action with Mike Swick and Paulo Thiago.
Mike Goldberg brought up the Swickotine. It’s been almost four years since Swick won by Guillotine.
Wow! Thiago rocked Swick with a left and then choked him out with a D’arce. How good is Thiago? He’s 3-1 in the UFC with wins over Koscheck, Volkmann, and Swick and a tough loss to Fitch.
They just plugged the Jose Aldo/Urijah Faber bout for April 24th. It’s too bad so few will see it as it’s going to be a great scrap.
Chael Sonnen got out of a Guillotine by Nate Marquardt and then blasted away while in Nate’s guard. Good place for Chael to be because as soon as they stood Nate blasted Chael with a flying knee.
Crazy, Chael beat up Nate for seven minutes and he’s the one bleeding all over the place!
Joe said Nate was visibly weary and he really was. He spent ten minutes underneath Chael in the first two rounds.
Woah, how exciting was that Guillotine attempt by Nate! Chael’s face turned tomato red.
Nate wasn’t able to steal the last round. Amazing effort by Chael Sonnen. Could he do the same to Anderson Silva?
Here we go, history is being made on February 6, 2009. Two UFC Hall of Famers fighting.
Isn’t it amazing that we’re watching two guys in their mid-forties throwing their hands in the Octagon? It makes me feel so pathetic that I’m out of shape in my mid-thirties, but it also gives me hope…
Randy is rocking Mark with all kinds of strikes.
Round two and Randy rocked Mark, got the mount, then subbed him with an RNC.
Randy said it, “46 years young.”
Then all the sudden Mark and Tito were jawing back and forth. How’d that happen and when did I change the channel to a soap opera?
Decent card, really impressed with Chael Sonnen and Paulo Thiago. Phil Davis has a bright, bright, bright, bright, bright future in the UFC. Melvin Guillard looked pretty good too and seems to be getting right in the head.
UFC 118 as it Happens and Happened: saying bye to James Toney

The gladiator guy is putting on his stuff. This is the first time he’s ever
put on his gear and walked out in Boston.
“I have no doubt tonight Joe, that t...
